Review

The staff were respectful and caring to our family member, they listened and we never felt rushed if we needed to speak to a member of staff. The support they offer carers or family members is fantastic with online chats, courses and groups to attend. The food was of a good standard and there was plenty of choice.

I had so many issues with the way I was treated. I had to complain several times about the male carers. There were several occasions where the staff would check on me and not bother knocking before checking. On one occasion a female member of staff came to check when I was on the toilet. She didn't knock. On another occasion I was half naked getting changed and a male staff member came and stared at me through the door. I am a female and I don't think this is right. On a several occasions there was only one female member of staff on duty with six males. This isn't right for a female ward. Some members of staff went out of their way to wind me up. I was not treated with dignity at all while I was there. There were only two members of staff who actually did things right. And only one that felt safe with. My care plan was not followed at all. This place needs a serious overhaul or shutting down. They lied and tried to make me look bad. They wouldn't listen to my concerns at all. I made several complaints about the way I was being treated and nothing was done about it.

Allen Ward is a consistently caring & supportive environment, the staff are on the whole, stellar from HCA’s to the management team. There can be some issues with communication and providing information about decisions, tribunals, appointments etc. and inconsistency between shift co-ordinators. The ward has good daily structure & has lots of posters letting patients know about the services/activities on offer. When there are staff available, they are very good at doing activities with us & there are lots of supplies. The consultant, Dr Tsatalou is fair and always takes the time to listen to your requests and explain her decisions if they can’t be met. She is very nice & always makes sure to introduce anyone who is present in meetings to make you feel more comfortable.

A problem I've encountered is that supplements etc would be confiscated and not given back when I'm discharged. It's also hard to get "treatment" for small things - eg. if I'm developing a cold and would like some vitamin C, it's impossible as the nurses would have kept the supplements and ask for prescription instead of give a dose within the daily recommendation dose, and I ended up nearly having a fever. Upon discharge, the supplements confiscated weren't given back at all.

I was detained under a section and I've lost more than 400 pounds of cash and all my ID because folks in the ward might have forgotten to produce a list of my belongings when they searched my bags and stored away some important belongings. Do ask for them if you get detained!!! I hope doctors could listen more to patients' complaints of medication not working, and second-think when it comes to diagnoses, instead of brushing every negative experience off as side-effects of the medication. Sometimes medication genuinely does not work or make things worse, and being forced to take them under a section could prove really suffering.

I cannot recommend the warneford doctors and psychiatrists enough! They’ve helped me through significantly low and problematic periods of my life and managed to save me from some extremely mentally volatile situations. They’ve changed my life for the better and helped me regain some clarity on what’s wrong with me and how I can be helped with medication. Dr Zghoul, Dr Hong & Dr Reddy have been amazing. I wish I could do something for them as they have given me such support and kindness. Dr Zghoul especially and Dr Hong. Thank you so so so so much.

There were a handful of very nice and attentive staff, but the system wouldn't listen to their recommendations. There were others that were just ticking a box and not listening to my needs at all. And others that were arrogant and made huge assumptions about my needs. I was discharged in the middle of a very unstable period, despite my support worker strongly recommending that I remain on the service. Their threshold for "well enough" is laughable at best, dangerous at worst. I was discharged without my medication being stabilised. It is not appropriate for my GP to have to work it out (although she really tries!) I don't think anyone there knows enough about bipolar and their approach is limited as a result. They also don't seem to understand different episodes within bipolar. (I suggest you do a lot of reading about mixed episodes)

They made me eat ham when I am a vegetarian. They locked me up. My records are missing. They wouldn’t let me go to the dentist so I lost a tooth. They forced me to see an occupational health doctor which shouldn’t have been compulsory
